Group Visit Logistics
School and group programs require a minimum of two weeks advance booking, and can be scheduled beginning June 1 for the following school year. Programs can be arranged online, by email (email@example.com) or by phone (206.543.5591).
- Placing a hold on a tentative date and time will hold your program for two weeks. If you do not confirm your program within two weeks of placing a hold, your hold will be released.
- Cancellation for school programs must be made two weeks in advance in order to receive a refund. Efforts will be made to reschedule your program if you must cancel within two weeks prior to your program, but refunds cannot be offered.
Programs are available Monday—Friday, 10 am—5 pm through December 14, 2018. Duration varies by program. We do not offer Group Visits on Free First Thursdays.
Our generous donors make it possible for us to offer cost assistance to schools and programs with 40% or more of their student population eligible for the National School Lunch Program. Cost assistance offerings are as follows:
- Organizations with 40-59% of their student population eligible for the National School Lunch program qualify for half-priced program fees
- Organizations with 60-100% of their student population eligible for the National School Lunch program qualify for waived program fees
- Some cost assistance is available for other circumstances
Payment is due on or before the date of your visit. Payment method options are check, credit card, or purchase order.

Chaperones are expected to help students complete activities and maintain appropriate museum behavior. Chaperones are admitted free to the museum with your group. We request a minimum of 1:8 chaperone to students ratio.
We will provide a Chaperone Information Guide when you book your tour. Please make sure each chaperone receives a copy to review before your visit.
We recommend students wear name tags that include the name of your school when visiting the museum so that our educators can address students during the program.

The Burke Museum is building a new museum that will open in fall 2019. Bus parking will be available in the roundabout in front of the Burke's main entrance during construction. For more information about parking, please visit our Directions + Parking page.

Weather permitting, please have groups gather at the front entrance of the museum. Have one adult, preferably the teacher who scheduled the field trip, enter the museum to check in with a member of the Education staff. Staff will then bring your group into the museum, point out designated storage bins and give a brief orientation before beginning your program.
There are no indoor facilities for eating lunch or snacks at the Burke, but we do have picnic tables to the left of the museum entrance that are designated for school groups. In the event of rain, cafeteria lunches and indoor seating are available on campus a short walk—about 10 minutes—from the museum in the “By George Cafe,” located on the ground floor of the Odegaard Undergraduate Library in Red Square. Another option for indoor seating on campus is the student union building, otherwise known as the “HUB.” For the location of these buildings, see the UW campus map.
Please refrain from using cell phones during the tour. If an adult must take a call or text during the tour, we ask that they step outside the gallery to avoid distracting the students and the museum staff.
Visitors may take photographs or digital images for personal, noncommercial use, unless otherwise noted (these instances will be clearly marked with “No Photography” notices). Excessive flash, tripods, and monopods are not allowed. Prior written permission from the Burke is required for:
- All filming or photography for commercial or media use
- Reproduction or sale of photographs
- Publication of images
Teachers and/or chaperones are responsible for first aid care for their students. Even though backpacks are not allowed in the museum galleries, we make an exception for first aid backpacks. In case of emergency, museum staff will contact 911.
A wheelchair is available for visitors who may need it. We also have an elevator to help visitors move between the two floors of the museum galleries. If you are concerned about the facility’s ability to meet your group’s needs, please contact the Education Division at 206.543.5591.
